La Councilman And Soda Ban---Los Angeles City Council member Mitchell Englander Tuesday is expected to discuss his motion to ban the sale of soda from city park and library vending machines.
Englander, who is set to address the Arts, Parks, Health and Aging Committee, says he wrote the motion after his daughter was unable to purchase any beverages other than soda at a local park. He has also expressed concerns about the childhood obesity epidemic.
“As a father, and a longtime board member of the American Diabetes Association, the health of our children has long been a concern for me,” he said in a statement. “Providing healthier beverages in City vending machines is an easy way to make headway in the battle against diabetes and childhood obesity.”
The Los Angeles County Health Department, First Five LA and the American Diabetes Association have all been pushing for healthier drink options for children.
